Updating old quicken files
When you update Quicken, you are downloading and installing a free patch release for the version of Quicken you're currently using.
You can view the differences between updates, upgrades, and versions here.
First, check the version and the release number of the Quicken software you're using.
You will receive a message confirming that you're already running the latest version.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." Yesterday, I updated to the Quicken 2009 program but still get the same error message.
I am able to open the Quicken 2009 program and data file as a different administrative user on the same computer, but I am the primary computer user and have administrative privileges.
Upgrade An upgrade is when you go from one version of Quicken to a newer version of Quicken.
For example, if you have Quicken for Windows Premier 2016 and you purchase and install Quicken for Windows Premier 2017, you have upgraded your Quicken version to Premier 2017.
You typically do this, however, only when instructed by Quicken or Intuit technical support people.
Compare the latest versions of Quicken and find what fits your financial needs here.
You can buy the software and download it directly from us -- no need to drive to the store or wait for it to arrive in the mail. You're either going to restore a backup you made or just open your data file in the new version of Quicken. The first time you open it, your data gets to work in the new version -- automatically. What if I have an older computer, can I install a newer version of Quicken?
Using a new flash drive is probably a good idea, too. First, you can try restoring the files from the secret Quicken backup directory.
If you have hard drive problems or another recurring problem, whatever fouled up your file this time may rear its ugly head again — and soon. To do so, you follow the same file restoration steps, with one minor exception.
